Paper satellites and rocks

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

I haven’t been here for a very long time. Its nice to write my password and go through the gate. I feel like I’ve been staying in somebody else’s house for a while. Today and yesterday felt more familiar. We built the geostationary orbit and making things is like a cipher, the thing you are […]

and for the other place

Monday, July 21st, 2008

The man who tap danced to the beat of his heart. He tried to catch the rhythm and then, as it was caught, to break it. He called it Moon Calendar. He was thinking of it as a way of changing the centre point, from the beat of the heart to the footsteps, to the […]

Today

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

It made people happy.
Thanks all the people who helped me here and specially the crew - Liddy, Merlin, Kelly and Bean.
I’m tired and I’m not tired - its so much fun to hook up with the people round the world doing their events - it feels so nostalgic, like the first satellite broadcasts.
Its nice to […]

Learning the HH VV HV

Friday, March 24th, 2006

It happened. I found remote sensing in the Signal Processing room and Flavio told me all about how they process the images from Radarsat.
They’re not the first to receive the data. Its first processed into an image and then passed on to them to work out what everything is, how to interpret the image. Now […]

Mapping

Friday, March 24th, 2006

Lisa Parks showed me a mapping of the area of former Yugoslavia which she’d developed. Before the NATO bombings, the media had used one satellite, EUTELSAT, but the attacks destroyed the broadcast infrastructure. Her map showed tracings, linking countless commercial interests with something like twenty satellites now involved in uploading and downloading media. Just a […]

The Gravity Anomaly Map of Canada

Friday, January 13th, 2006

I followed a sign to the astronomical observatory and found this:

The Gravity Anomaly Map of Canada.
The people in this building don’t use satellites, they work on the ground. Good for them.
