PHASE ONE
The first stage of this work began at the Hypermedia Research Centre at the University of Westminster where I began to think about making work that existed only on the Internet. I liked being able to monitor shipping movements in Plymouth from London and thought about the idea of remoteness. I looked to see what I could find out about Punto Arenas, which to me seemed very far away and quickly realized that ‘remoteness’ is a culturally loaded term and perspective, especially for a British person. Punto Arenas is not remote for the people who live there. The orbital environment seemed to have an equidistant remoteness to anywhere on the ground and like the Internet, had an ambiguous relation to place.. I began to watch changing coordinates of satellites, tracked by NASA and to learn more about the heavy cultural bias of this recently created environment.

Funding to develop this research into a live Web site has come from Impakt in The Netherlands, who have commissioned an online work that examines connections between the Internet and satellite networks. Thanks for their patience and support in helping me develop this.
